Faction conflict heats up in revamped Southern Barrens

With millions of unlucky World of Warcraft players sitting out on the Cataclysm beta, it’s heartening to see Blizzard share the hype to non-beta testers through insightful developer Q&As.

The most recent is an interview with game designers game Dave Kosak and Roman Marotte, who revealed the radical changes happening at the Southern Barrens. It seems Southern Barrens will be one of the hardest-hit regions come Cataclysm, having its land mass ripped in two due to Deathwing-led destruction. The Northern Barrens, meanwhile, remains a safe leveling ground for lowbie Horde toons.

The developers said the destructive mayhem gave them “enormous freedom” to amp up Southern Barrens conflict:

In the wake of the Cataclysm, the Alliance has been aggressively expanding into the heart of the continent from the east coast. As players enter the zone, they’ll find that the Horde is really up against the ropes. The escalating conflict between the two rival factions is front and center here, providing a backdrop for much of the area’s quests.

The Blizzard developers also hinted at a stalemate between the Horde and Alliance where each faction takes and loses ground, escalating into more violent conflict.

Horde players will see devastation at Camp Taurajo and Honor’s Stand. Their task is to pick up the pieces, rally the scattered Horde forces and exact revenge for the fallen camp. Meanwhile, Alliance players will have to defend their footholds in the region such as Northwatch Hold and the crossroads leading to their Theramore brethren.

Seems like things are heating up at the Southern Barrens, and just might turn into a PvP hot spot on the level of Tarren Mill vs. Southshore. Mankrik’s wife will be pleased.
